I like what youâre saying: we believe what we believe because we believe. But we also donât believe because with the best will in the world in the end we canât believe. In South Africa, where awful things are happening to people all the time, children are killed in shack fires, babies are raped, 94 mentally ill patients are consigned to so-called NGOâs who let them die of starvation, dehydration and âgod?â knows what else. So although I deeply envy people who believe that there is a god who is personally interested in their well-being, I always end up asking: but where was God then? That is the question that no Christian is prepared to answer, except to say we donât understand Godâs ways.â âBut, I want to say âyou do understand absolutely that unless you believe in his existence on no evidence except what was written in a collection of texts that was written 2000 years ago, you will burn in an eternal fire!â
Donât get me wrong â whenever Iâm in a fix â I pray fervently â ahd even more often I pray equally fervently to God â please protect this person, that child â often people I donât know but have chance encounters with, often during my train commutes. If only people like my sister-in-law who claims God was looking after her because she got out of a shopping mall before there was a shoot-out, didnât rile me so. What about the people who didnât get out?
No, Iâm not taking issue with you, author, because like you, Iâd love to believe but canât.
