GOD, THE WORLD, THE DEVIL, AND LATE NIGHT TV

Colbert had Ricky Gervais on this evening. He’s not a particular favorite of ours, but we like him well enough. Tonight, he and Colbert got into a mini debate on the existence of God. Gervais…

  1. I like what you’re saying: we believe what we believe because we believe. But we also don’t believe because with the best will in the world in the end we can’t believe. In South Africa, where awful things are happening to people all the time, children are killed in shack fires, babies are raped, 94 mentally ill patients are consigned to so-called NGO’s who let them die of starvation, dehydration and “god?” knows what else. So although I deeply envy people who believe that there is a god who is personally interested in their well-being, I always end up asking: but where was God then? That is the question that no Christian is prepared to answer, except to say we don’t understand God’s ways.” “But, I want to say “you do understand absolutely that unless you believe in his existence on no evidence except what was written in a collection of texts that was written 2000 years ago, you will burn in an eternal fire!”
Don’t get me wrong – whenever I’m in a fix – I pray fervently – ahd even more often I pray equally fervently to God – please protect this person, that child – often people I don’t know but have chance encounters with, often during my train commutes. If only people like my sister-in-law who claims God was looking after her because she got out of a shopping mall before there was a shoot-out, didn’t rile me so. What about the people who didn’t get out?

No, I’m not taking issue with you, author, because like you, I’d love to believe but can’t.
